Shadow Figures, 1983–1988

I discovered, like all New Yorkers, Richard Hambleton’s Shadowmen series painted throughout out the alleys and parking lots, (the darker the better) of lower Manhattan. I would wake up early on Sunday mornings combing the streets of lower Manhattan with the traffic load being the lightest of the week. I would mark on the map shadow figures with their exact location and then denote the best time of day to photograph them when the lighting was best. Occasionally it would be in that moment but often it would involve a return trip. I would then set up my Leica M3 and shoot with Kodachrome film. I accomplished this work over a five year period.
